Wolves and Wild Roses

The fire crackled and spat embers against the wire screen, casting light across the parlor. Seated in a red, plush chair, a woman stared pensively at the newspaper in front of her. She wore a black gown, cut at her shoulders and her blonde hair was tied into a long braid. As she scanned the periodical, she paid close attention to each article, looking for hints beyond the headlines.

Book 1, Chapter 3

“Jonathan? Hellooo?” The seminarian gave a jolt and returned to his senses. He stared around the cafeteria for a few seconds, then to the tray of peas and mashed potatoes now sitting cold in front of him. Turning he saw the familiar face of his roommate, Greg, eyebrow crooked and glasses tilted askew. “You alive?”

The Heir of Archmond

The moon cast ebbing shadows across the mill as clouds danced in the night sky. It was quiet, quiet even for the hidden mill on the outskirts of Archmond. Inside, a raven walked, pacing along the shelves filled with the strangest assortment of eclectic oddities. A jar filled with eyes turned, all following the raven's movement. A deer head, mounted on the wall, turned to watch as the corvid flapped its wings and hopped onto a desk. Papers were strewn about, forms of some sort, all half-finished. The bird ignored these, as had whoever began them seemed to. It moved toward a door in the back of the strange shop, planting itself several feet away.

Val’s Blog

Hey my little blood suckers! I hope you've all been eating well! -- So I got a message from a newcomer to the darkside just the other day. She was, shock of shocks, having trouble adjusting to, shall we say, the graveyard shift. Now, of course my initial response was to point her toward the back log of entries I have on just this topic... but I decided to be nice and address her issue. Apparently this is an issue a lot of you little rookie devils are having and I decided it's time to update the list. Here's a list of my top ten questions I keep getting asked even though I've answered them before. And, yes, for my own sanity, I've included links to the individual articles at the end of the post.

Book 1, Chapter 2

The pair sat in the car, Alistair’s hand resting on the ignition. He turned to his pupil. Jonathan seemed distant, lost. Of everything the young man had experienced that evening, his mind dwelt mostly on the feeling that had churned through his chest and bit at his heart. A burning, a stinging almost, a sensation of something tugging at his very soul. It was all-encompassing, and yet when he tried to focus on it, to find the words to name it, it was absent, every beyond the grasp of his comprehension.

Book 1, Chapter 1

The corridors of Ann Bayley Hall glimmered in the light of the midday sun. Students milled from building to building just outside, the ebbing days of summer clinging to the campus as Jonathan moved through the halls. In his black shirt and white clerical collar, he dodged between other young men and women, a smile on his lips, approaching Father Alistair’s office with purpose. He paused at the door, closing his eyes. He leaned against the wall outside Alistair’s office, hearing his mentor’s voice echoing from within, apparently advising another student on some matter.

Book 2, Chapter 1

The sun sank low, casting a web of broken shadows through the treetops that danced across the little house. It was older, showing significant wear as well as a severe lack of maintenance. The lawn was overgrown and filled with weeds. There were a few cars parked in the drive that seemed as if they hadn't run in years. The paint peeled from the outside, flaking off with every gust of wind and tonight the wind seemed to blow harder than usual causing the house to shake and creak loudly.
